What is radon, and where does it come from?
Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from uranium breaking down naturally in soil and rock. It moves up through the ground and into houses through the foundation. You can't see it or smell it, so a test is the only way to know your level.
What number means I need a radon system?
The EPA recommends fixing a home at 4.0 pCi/L or higher, and suggests considering a fix between 2 and 4. If your result is 4.0 or above, a mitigation system is the standard repair.
How fast can you get out for an estimate?
Reach us during business hours, Monday through Saturday, and we'll set up your free estimate that same day. Hours are Monday to Friday 7 am to 6 pm and Saturday 9 am to 4 pm.
Do radon estimates cost anything?
No. Estimates are free. You get a written price after we've looked at the house.
How do I know the system is working after you leave?
We run a follow-up radon test once the fan has been running, and we show you how to read the gauge on the pipe. If the liquid in the gauge ever reads level on both sides, the fan has stopped pulling and you should call.
Can you fix a radon system someone else installed?
Yes. We replace radon fans, reseal sump lids, repair pipe joints and crawlspace membranes, and redesign systems that never brought the number down, no matter who installed them.
Will a radon system work in an old stone basement?
Yes. Stone foundations need more sealing at the wall joints and any dirt or broken floor areas, and sometimes more than one suction point, but they can be mitigated. We plan it after seeing the basement.
Does radon only matter if we use the basement?
The basement is usually where levels are highest, but radon moves through the whole house. It matters most on floors where people spend a lot of time, which is why finishing a basement is a good moment to test.
Do I need to retest later?
Yes. The EPA recommends retesting every two years after a system is installed, and any time you renovate the lowest level or change the foundation.
